About Pack 522
Pack 522 is part of the Occoneechee Council which has twelve districts located in the following North Carolina counties: Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Lee, Moore, Orange, Vance, Wake and Warren. Within the Occoneechee Council, Pack 522 is in the Awahili District. Awahili means "Eagle" in Cherokee. Our district covers a vast area including Franklinton, Louisburg, Bunn, Oxford, Henderson, Kittrell, Warrenton, Butner, Rolesville, Wendell and Zebulon.
Pack 522 is chartered by Zebulon Baptist Church (ZBC). Most meetings and events are held at the church located at 400 N Arendell Ave, Zebulon, NC 27597 (map and directions). ZBC is so supportive of the Pack!
The Pack is really an extended family and many have been involved with the Pack for several years. Even as boys age out of Cub Scouts and advance to Boy Scouts, the Troop and Pack families are always nearby and supportive. Boy Scout Troop 524 is also based out of Zebulon Baptist Church and many of the Pack 522 Cubs bridge over into that Troop. Scouting is a lot of fun but Pack 522 realizes that it's not the only thing your family is likely committed to and it can be a struggle to balance commitments. Therefore, the Pack does its best to be flexible and mindful of family commitments such as school, athletics, church activities, etc. In fact, many of our scouts enjoy scouting and also regularly participate in community recreational sports and church activities.
The Pack is comprised of 5 individual dens, each containing 4-12 boys ranging in age from 6 to 11. Each den works throughout the scouting year to complete age appropriate achievements and electives from their handbooks to earn their rank and other service, sports, or academic awards. The dens are led by parent or guardian adult volunteers who have completed the required BSA training. For more information about how you can get involved with a the Pack, contact the Pack using the information on the Contact tab.
The first rank every boy earns is the Bobcat, regardless of his age or grade level. On the Bobcat trail, the scout demonstrates his commitment to participating in Scouting by learning the Cub Scout Promise, The Law Of the Pack, Scout Sign, and a few other things that are an important foundation to build upon as he continues with Scouts. Pack 522 makes a big deal about our Bobcats! Not only is it the scout's first rank achievement, it is also an chance to welcome a new family into ours. More information about the Bobcat requirements can be found in each rank's Handbook. Other cub ranks are divided as follows:
Tigers - 1st grade or 7 years old
Wolves - 2nd grade or 8 years old
Bears - 3rd grade or 9 years old
Webelos I - 4th grade or 10 years old
Webelos II - 5th grade or 11 years old
In all of the dens, the Cub Scout Motto, "DO YOUR BEST!" is put to practice! Although most achievements will be completed during den meetings, Scouts are expected to finish or makeup activities at home that were not completed with the den. There are electives or other activities available at each rank that allow scouts to go above and beyond on their own to earn more awards. Each den's Handbook has all the details regarding achievements and electives. The handbook can be purchased at the scout store in Raleigh or online. Scouts who have completed the required achievements and electives for their rank will be awarded their rank Patch and other insignia to be worn on their uniform at the graduation ceremony at the end of the scouting year.
Some awards, such as Progress Towards Rank, are awarded in the den meetings but most are presented to the Scouts at monthly Pack Meetings. Pack Meetings are held in the Blue Room at the church and include lots of important information about Pack planning and events but most importantly they are a fun night where all the dens, parents, and families join together and celebrate the scouts' achievements. Each scout is individually presented with the awards he has earned for the month and the dens each act out a funny skit they've chosen and practiced.
